Water & Wastewater Engineer

About the business

We help people make good clean water throughout Australia, with special emphasis on looking after small and remote communities; from mines, industry and resorts, to rural towns and indigenous communities.

We are seeking an energetic, experienced Water Engineer who is dedicated to providing high quality, value for money engineering services, to join our team of professionals as a Water and Wastewater Engineer.

Selection Criteria

The successful applicant will ideally have the following.


  • A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, or similar

Knowledge & Experience:

Have demonstrated experience:

  • Water/wastewater treatment plant assessment,
  • Water/wastewater treatment plant operation & design;
  • Hydrology (pipe, channels, weirs and landscapes);
  • Assessment of Environmental and water quality;
  • Effluents disposal by irrigation onto pasture, native forest and woodland, steep slopes and rain forest, native grass meadows;
  • Undertake dynamic and food Mass balances;
  • Model and assess sediment and erosion control;
  • Development and assessment of landfill leachate treatment systems and water management plan;
  • Assessment of feedlot wastewater treatment and effluent disposal system;
  • Stormwater management, channel and drainage systems and applications;
  • Undertake engineering research.


Working knowledge of below software (not limiting to):

  • MEDLI;
  • MUSIC;
  • AutoCAD
  • CAD based design

Along with a positive attitude, great communication skills and eye for detail, interests in water/wastewater treatment, and small collection/reticulation systems is ideal.

Previous experience in the consulting industry will be a distinct advantage.

Water Industry Trainer

Are you ready to pass on your hard-won skills and knowledge in Water Industry to the next generation in metro, regional and remote communities? Here is an opportunity for you.  This position is available due to significant business growth recently.

The Role

  • Deliver and assess qualifications and units of competency under National Water Training Package
  • Develop learner resource materials
  • Support the learners through their course study
  • Contribute to assessment validation and quality process

To provide the hands-on and practical training, you will need to travel to the student’s workplace, quite often in regional and remote areas.  All travel will be organised and paid for by the company. A typical routine is 2 weeks out then 2 weeks back to the home base, to catch up with assessment / administrative paperwork.

Who we are looking for?

  • Currently (or recently) working in the water industry, with a passion for treatment technologies and/or infrastructure, and water / environmental management;
  • Have a desire to instruct and develop others;
  • Patient, build trust easy with others, have the initiative to solve problems and seek information to understand students’ needs & expectations;
  • Charisma / Good sense of humour, to engage learners attention while training and assessing them;
  • Enjoy a bit of travelling and a bit of time in office;
  • Work under direction not close supervision

Skills & Experience


  • Significant practical experience in operating/managing/engineering water and wastewater treatment and/or drinking water supply, or sewage collection systems;
  • Certificate III level or above qualification in water/wastewater/network-related discipline;
  • Excellent verbal communication skills in English, with a flair for making technical subjects interesting, and strong writing skills.
  • Current Drivers license


  • Holding the Cert IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40116 or TAE40110 + requisite additional units), Diploma or above qualification in adult education

Project Coordinator

We are seeking an energetic, motivated and proactive Project Coordinator who is dedicated to providing high-quality project coordination support to our Engineering and Scientific Services (ESS) team.

About the role

This position plays a key role in the smooth operation of the ESS team and the quality and timeliness of the project delivery within the team.

Duties will include, but not limited to:

  • Scheduling of future works and resourcing of equipment and team members;
  • Project coordination and support, including set up the project, purchase of parts, organise travel, collateral and management of project documentation, track project budget, monitor deadlines and liaise with appropriate internal and external stakeholders;
  • Preparing sales invoices;
  • Formatting, publishing and distributing reports prepared by technical teams;
  • Managing and maintaining quality systems for the team, including document control;
  • Performing cost analysis on various projects;
  • Other general office daily duties.

  • Advanced computer skills across the MS Office suite, particularly in Excel and Word;
  • Experience with MYOB Account Right Premier or similar systems;
  • Experience with CRM Goldmine and Sage Time Billing (desirable, but not necessary);
  • Experience with Quality Assurance systems (desirable, but not necessary).

Casual/Relief Water Industry Operator

Simmonds & Bristow are looking for Experienced Treatment Plant Operators for short and long term contracts. Simmonds & Bristow are an integrated water specialists assisting regional, remote and small communities across Australia and the South Pacific to produce potable water and effluent quality of the highest standard. We service a wide range of clients including mines, industrials, resorts and regional councils. We are looking for Casual and Fixed Term Water/Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators.

The kinds of places we go:

  • Resorts (in locations warm and cold)
  • Councils (all over Australia, some remote, some not)
  • Industrial sites (all over Australia, some remote, some not)

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A Certificate III in Water and Wastewater Operations, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Experience in operating/maintaining water &/or wastewater treatment plants.
  • Will hold themselves to high professional standards and be a self-starter.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with management and liaise with clients is important, as is a flexible attitude to work hours.
  • Good written and spoken English plus the ability to follow procedures.
  • An Australian resident and be available for an immediate start.
  • Basic computer skills are also an advantage.
