Riding to help kids live their lives, not fight for them.
For October, hundreds of people around the country set out on their bikes to ride for kid’s cancer in the Great Cycle Challenge. The challenge is all about raising money for the Children’s Medical Research Institute to fund research for more effective cancer treatments and to reach the ultimate goal: a cure for all childhood cancers.
David Smith has a 4-year legacy with the institute now and has committed to a goal of riding 100km in October.
Why?
Because cancer is the largest killer of children from disease in Australia. Over 700 Australian children are diagnosed with cancer every year and sadly, 3 children die every week.
The challenge started in 2013 and in 10 years the community has grown to 107,764 riders who have ridden a total of 31,762,710km and so far have raised $42,455,464 in support.
David Smith embarked on his 4th journey in support of this cause on the 1st of October.
David Smith started competing in the challenge in 2015 and has entered from 2022 onwards, with 2023 his most successful year to date. In total, he has helped raise over $2.5K for kids’ cancer research, with 918km ridden.
This year he will be riding 100km. From the 1st to the 31st of October he will be found on his bike, journeying throughout the different areas in Australia he may find himself in.
How the challenge works
The challenge is open to anyone of all ages and abilities and kms can be logged by bike or spin. Your goal is up to you and any moment counts, whether a ride on your way to work, during a lunch break or as an all-day event, you log your time and track your kilometres.
As you may know, David is one of our operators stationed in Isaac Regional Council. He will be using his bike as his mode of transport to and from sites and plans to spend some time riding over his break later in the month.
We are proud to be able to support David Smith again and contribute to the cause as he embarks on this challenge to make little lives better.
David and his stuffed animal “Whizz” will be seen riding all across Queensland this month as he embarks to complete 100km of riding for the challenge. You can follow his journey on his page where he will regularly be sharing these updates.
