Insights from Recent Seasons
Queensland’s recent wet seasons have brought record-breaking rainfall and widespread flooding. In 2024 alone, Brisbane recorded 160 rainy days, and Far North Queensland saw over 2,000 mm of rain during Cyclone Jasper. February’s flash floods dropped 183.6 mm in just 24 hours, and towns like Thargomindah were entirely evacuated due to rising waters.
Forecasts for the 2025/26 summer suggest that Queensland is likely to experience above-average rainfall, particularly across the eastern and northern regions. Climate models indicate a La Niña-like pattern may persist, supported by a negative Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) and warm sea surface temperatures around Australia. These conditions typically bring increased rainfall, higher tropical cyclone activity, and a greater risk of flooding during the wet season. We should begin preparing now to ensure water and wastewater systems are resilient and ready to respond.
Flood events like these introduce:
- Sediment and debris into source water
- Nutrient spikes that can trigger algal blooms
- Sewage and chemical runoff, which challenge treatment systems
Maintaining water quality during and after floods requires:
- Proactive monitoring
- Flexible treatment processes
- Rapid response protocols

Our team has supported clients through these challenges under Plant Operations & Maintenance Services (POMS) contracts. From emergency call-outs to ongoing monitoring, our operators help ensure systems stay compliant and communities stay safe — even in the toughest conditions.
Responding effectively requires more than just operational support. In addition to our POMS team, Simmonds & Bristow’s Technical Services team provides expert assistance with:
- Water sampling and laboratory analysis
- Source water assessments
- Treatment process reviews and optimisation
Together, our teams help ensure water and wastewater systems remain safe, compliant, and resilient — even under extreme conditions.
If you’re reviewing your flood-readiness plan or preparing for the next wet season, we’re here to help.
